A fraction is in lowest terms when no number bigger than 1 divides both the top and the bottom. This tool finds that number, the greatest common factor, and does the dividing for you.
How To Use The Fraction Simplifier
- Enter the numerator and the denominator. Both should be whole numbers, and the denominator cannot be zero.
- For a mixed number such as 2 4/6, put 2 in Whole and 4 and 6 in the fraction boxes. Leave Whole at 0 for a simple fraction.
- Read the result. You get the lowest terms, the improper form, and the greatest common factor that was divided out.
How Simplifying Works
Mixed numbers are converted to improper fractions first: W n/d = (W × d + n) / d. The result is then written back as a mixed number when it is bigger than 1.
Worked Examples
A Simple Fraction
- Problem
- Simplify 24/36.
- Steps
- The greatest common factor of 24 and 36 is 12. Divide both parts by 12.
- Result
- 2/3
A Mixed Number
- Problem
- Simplify 2 4/6.
- Steps
- 2 4/6 = 16/6. The greatest common factor of 16 and 6 is 2, so 16/6 = 8/3.
- Result
- 2 2/3
Already In Lowest Terms
- Problem
- Simplify 7/3.
- Steps
- The greatest common factor is 1, so nothing cancels. The improper fraction is written as a mixed number.
- Result
- 2 1/3

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the greatest common factor?
It is the largest whole number that divides both the numerator and the denominator with no remainder. For 24 and 36, that number is 12.
Why does 7/3 become 2 1/3?
7/3 is already in lowest terms, but it is an improper fraction. The tool also writes it as a mixed number: 2 wholes and 1/3 left over.
Can I simplify a negative fraction?
Yes. Put the minus sign on the numerator for a simple fraction, or on the whole part for a mixed number. The sign is kept in the answer.
What if the denominator is zero?
Dividing by zero has no answer, so the tool asks you to change the denominator instead of showing a result.
