Rounding Calculator: Round To Any Place Value, Decimal Or Significant Figure

Last updated: October 2026

A rounding calculator shortens a number to the place you choose. Find the digit in that place, then look one digit to the right. If it is 5 or more, round up. If it is 4 or less, keep the digit. So 3.14159 rounded to the nearest hundredth is 3.14, and 4,872 rounded to the nearest hundred is 4,900.

This guide covers the basic rule, decimals, significant figures, every rounding method and how spreadsheets and code round. Every example was checked in Python.

How Rounding Works: The Basic Rule

Rounding has two steps: find the rounding digit, then let the digit to its right decide.

Example: round 4,872 to the nearest hundred

  1. The hundreds digit is 8.
  2. The digit to its right is 7, which is 5 or more, so round up.
  3. The 8 becomes 9, and the digits after it become zeros: 4,900.

Example: round 3.14159 to the nearest hundredth

  1. The hundredths digit is 4.
  2. The next digit is 1, which is 4 or less, so the 4 stays.
  3. Drop the rest: 3.14.

Only the next digit decides. 3.1449 to the hundredths is 3.14, even though 49 follows.

Rounding To Each Place Value

Each place has a name, and the name tells you which digit to keep. This table rounds one number, 1,234,567.891, to every common place.

Rounding Decimals

Decimals round the same way, but you drop the digits after the rounding digit instead of turning them into zeros. Two cases need extra care: carrying past a 9 and keeping a final zero.

Carrying past a 9. Round 8.9496 to the nearest hundredth. The hundredths digit is 4 and the next digit is 9, so the 4 becomes 5: 8.95. Now round 2.97 to the nearest tenth. The 9 rounds up to 10, so you carry 1 into the ones place: 3.0.

Keeping the final zero. Write 3.0, not 3, when you round to the tenths. The zero shows the answer is accurate to one decimal place.

Rounding money. Rounding to the nearest cent means 2 decimal places, so $12.3456 becomes $12.35. The percentage calculator rounds percent results the same way.

Rounding To Significant Figures

Significant figures (sig figs) count the meaningful digits in a number, starting from the first nonzero digit. Rounding to sig figs keeps the size of the number while limiting its precision, which is the standard in science and engineering.

Follow these rules to count sig figs:

NumberSig figsResult
12.3456312.3
0.00456720.0046
0.001050630.00105
1,234,56731,230,000

Results like 1,230,000 are clearer in scientific notation, where 1.23 × 10⁶ shows exactly 3 sig figs. The scientific notation calculator converts between the two forms.

Rounding Methods Compared

The basic rule leaves one case open: a number exactly halfway, like 2.5. Methods break that tie differently, and some always round one way.

MethodWhat it does2.53.5−2.5−3.2
Half away from zeroTies go away from zero (the school rule)34−3−3
Half up (toward +∞)Ties go toward the larger number34−2−3
Half toward zeroTies go toward zero23−2−3
Half to even (banker's)Ties go to the even neighbor24−2−3
CeilingAlways up, toward +∞34−2−3
FloorAlways down, toward −∞23−3−4
TruncateChop the extra digits23−2−3

Half to even, also called banker's rounding, is the default in Python and many statistics tools. Rounding every tie up adds a small upward bias over many values, and sending half the ties down cancels it. For example, 74.25 to the nearest tenth is 74.3 by the school rule but 74.2 by half to even.

Ceiling and floor fit real-world limits. If 37 people ride in vans that seat 8, 37 ÷ 8 = 4.625, so you need 5 vans. That is a ceiling, not normal rounding.

Rounding To The Nearest Multiple Or Fraction

Sometimes you need to round to a step, like the nearest 5, quarter or sixteenth. Divide by the step, round to a whole number, then multiply back.

This works for quarters, 15-minute time blocks and tape measure marks. To simplify a fraction result like 8/16, the fraction calculator reduces it to 1/2.

How Excel, Python And JavaScript Round

Software does not always follow the school rule, which causes many off-by-a-cent errors.

ToolFunction2.5 becomes−2.5 becomesMethod
Excel, Google Sheets=ROUND(2.5, 0)3−3Half away from zero
Pythonround(2.5)2−2Half to even
JavaScriptMath.round(2.5)3−2Half up (toward +∞)

There is a second trap. Computers store most decimals in binary, so 2.675 is really 2.67499999…. That is why Python's round(2.675, 2) returns 2.67. For money, use a decimal type or work in whole cents.

Common Rounding Mistakes

Most rounding errors come from rounding too often or too early.

MistakeExampleFix
Double rounding4.47 → 4.5 → 5Round once from the original: 4.47 → 4

Frequently Asked Questions

What is 2.47 rounded to the nearest tenth?

2.47 rounded to the nearest tenth is 2.5. The tenths digit is 4, and the digit to its right is 7. Since 7 is 5 or more, the 4 rounds up to 5. Rounded to the nearest whole number, 2.47 becomes 2, because the tenths digit, 4, is less than 5. Always round from the original number, not from an already rounded one.

Does 5 round up or down?

In the standard school method, a 5 rounds up, so 6.5 becomes 7 and 0.25 becomes 0.3 at the tenths place. This is called rounding half away from zero. Some fields use banker's rounding instead, where a 5 rounds to the nearest even digit, so 6.5 becomes 6. Check which rule your class, workplace or software uses.

What is the difference between rounding and estimating?

Rounding follows a fixed rule to shorten one number. Estimating is a broader idea: you often round several numbers first, then do quick math with them to get a rough answer. For example, to estimate 48 × 21, round to 50 × 20 = 1,000. The exact answer is 1,008, so the estimate is close and much faster to find.

How do I round to the nearest whole number?

Look at the tenths digit, the first digit after the decimal point. If it is 5 or more, add 1 to the ones digit. If it is 4 or less, keep the ones digit. Then drop everything after the decimal point. So 17.6 becomes 18, 17.4 becomes 17, and 17.5 becomes 18 under the usual school rule.

Why do we round numbers?

Rounding makes numbers easier to read, remember and compare. It also keeps answers honest about precision. A measurement taken with a ruler marked in millimeters should not be reported to six decimal places. Rounding is also needed for money, since most prices stop at cents, and for quick mental math, where round numbers are faster to work with.
